  1. To be clear, the Danes are not so foolish as to selectively impose a tax on olive oil. Rather, all high-fat foods — yes, including high-fat dairy — are being hit with a tax, along with a parallel tax on sugar content. It would have been nice to have olive oil excluded, but on the other hand, I would shudder to think of this being reduced to the hideous carving-out of exemptions that turns solid regulations into mazes of tissue paper (to mix metaphors) we see in the American Congress.

    • Thank you for clearing up the misinformation from the article posted in Teatro Naturale International. Yes, carving out exemptions is a common practice not only in the US Congress but in the legislation of each US State. It does make for nightmarish implementation.

      Your “mazes of tissue paper” made me think of my my child’s hamster. The creature loves both the toilet tissue for nesting and the rolls to crawl through. The mixed metaphor seemed rather apt.
