Olive Crazy: All About Olives and Olive Oil

At least not blooming and growing in their state.

I just passed through Arizona today and remembered a conversation I had with a couple of women in a hotel in Santa Rosa, New Mexico a month ago. Both were from Flagstaff, AZ. After the pleasantries were over I asked if they knew of any olive groves in Arizona. They said they didn’t, but one of the women said that Arizona banned new olive trees from entering the state. I asked the reason and was told that many of the newer residents had moved there for respiratory relief and the self-pollinating olive trees were causing lots of respiratory distress in the State of Arizona.

I tried to do some research on this over the last month and forgot about it until I passed through Arizona today. I hadn’t found too much about it other than a few statements saying that most communities in Arizona banned new plantings of non-sterile olive varieties. I didn’t find any legislative measures though. If anyone knows when a bill was passed or the code section the law is in, I’d love to hear from you.

Thanks to Arizona’s immigration laws, it is hard to wade through the masses of articles on the internet to find anything else going on in Arizona not related to immigration. I guess if there was some cross border olive tree smuggling ring with the ill intent of suffocating Arizonans I’d be in luck. Alas no.

May the sun shine through your branches.
